An estimated 67% of eighth graders and 83% of tenth graders believe that alcohol is easily available to them for consumption.
When an individual has developed a physical dependence on alcohol, withdrawal symptoms, such as nausea, sweating, shakiness, and anxiety, will occur when alcohol use is stopped after a period of heavy drinking.
Alcoholics cannot control their drinking nor learn to drink in moderation. When an alcoholic drinks, they fail to recognize when they have had too much to drink.
In educating physicians and other health professionals throughout this country, the subject of alcoholism is rarely addressed; the fact that these clinicians will be afforded many opportunities to affect their patient's alcohol habits when they begin practicing medicine is ironic.
