- When legislators increased taxes on cigarettes and alcohol (formerly called a "sin tax"), reputable studies have indicated that raising taxes on these products did lower the use of them, especially among young people.
- Nearly two-thirds of children 15 and younger who died in alcohol-related motor vehicle crashes were riding with the drinking driver, 20% of which were properly restrained at the time of the crash, and that restraint use decreased as the driver's blood alcohol concentration increased.

- According to the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse, it was determined that college students were more likely to intervene in a drunk-driving situation if they knew and liked the driver, but only if the driver was evaluated to be dangerous and they felt that they would be able to help. Students were less likely to intervene when they were drunk themselves, or when they were afraid of how their intervention would affect their relationship with their peers.
